Resilience, Sustainability, and Equity: Syracuse 2080

Syracuse and Central New York, challenged by flooding, extreme cold, and water quality concerns, developed community visions of sustainability and resilience for the future of Syracuse and Central New York in 2080.

The Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) brought 24 stakeholders from different institutions together to jointly develop five visions for Syracuse and Central New York’s future in 2080. Some scenarios were adaptive, focusing on concerns like urban flooding and water quality, while others were transformative scenarios meant to inspire transformative change in the city and region. Participants identified goals, strategies, implementation timelines, maps, and narratives for the scenarios envisioned. Synthetic outputs as a result of the workshop include simulation models for evaluating the outcomes of specific strategies and a qualitative resilience assessment of the strategies for creating transformative change.
