Climate Change Urban Resilience Scenarios in Hermosillo

The desert city of Hermosillo in northwestern Mexico co-created adaptive scenarios to extreme events and transforming scenarios for futures with radical changes in the city’s infrastructure.

The Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) co-developed six scenarios representing visions of a safe, sustainable, and equitable Hermosillo capable of handling the climate extremes of a desert city in 2080. Over 60 policy-makers, civic and community leaders, and academics gathered to identify common goals for the future, as well as the strategies and objectives necessary to implement the changes envisioned. Synthetic outputs included future land use modeling, renderings, narratives, and qualitative resilience assessment. The models were presented in a second workshop for participants to refine strategies and facilitate new ideas for promoting sustainability and resilience in Hermosillo.
