Participatory scenario planning for sustainable land use in Lüneburg, Germany

As a part of a transdisciplinary research project with local stakeholders, we developed plausible scenarios for sustainable land use. We applied formative scenario analysis (Scholz and Tietje, 2002) using a diverse set of participatory formats. Preliminary and final results were illustrated.

Our scenario analysis pursued various goals. The scenarios aim to set prospects for normative development based on the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the project region. This forms a basis for measures and instruments to be created as a next step. The mutual design process between science and real-world actors also aimed to both create common understanding of sustainable land use futures and facilitate exchange between different perspectives on the topic. We hope such a dialogue can reduce potential conflicts among the involved stakeholders. Furthermore, the four chosen scenarios were visualized and translated into an exhibition, which was presented to local citizens and actors to initiate a debate on sustainable land use.
