Illustrative Narratives for Nature Futures
This paper provides an example of how the IPBES Nature Futures Framework can be used to develop scenarios.
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Nature Futures Framework was created to help create new scenarios and models that consider different perspectives on what we want the future of nature and people to look like.
In this project, experts from the IPBES task force on scenarios and models give an example of how the Nature Futures Framework can be used to create narratives that illustrate alternative positive future scenarios for nature.
The team developed six stories that focused on three current debates around sustainability transformation:
(1) land sparing vs. land sharing
(2) Half Earth vs. Whole Earth conservation, and
(3) green growth vs. post-growth economic development.
