Scenarios of the Pilón Lajas biosphere reserve and indigenous territory

Changes resulting from economic development, new infrastructure and technological advances are a challenge for many communities living in the Pilón Lajas Biosphere Reserve and indigenous territory.

The methodology for developing future scenarios was aimed at exploring how indigenous communities deal with current changes occurring in their territory or the Reserve, according to their perceptions. Scenarios were used to discuss a) how local people would be affected by each scenario, taking into account their current livelihood activities, needs and aspirations, b) how feasible and desirable perceived these scenarios are, and c) which policies they suggested to promote the most preferred scenario, according to their knowledge and understanding of who had agency and responsibility for those policies.

The scenarios were made in:

2014

The scenarios look out to:

2030
