Climate Change Urban Resilience Scenarios in South Phoenix
South Mountain Village, a neighborhood in the desert city of Phoenix, developed future community visions of sustainability and resilience to climate change and extreme weather events.
The Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) brought together approximately 50 practitioners, administrators, decision makers, designers, and academics to jointly develop five visions for South Mountain Village in 2080. The co-produced visions included adaptive scenarios in response to climate extremes as well as transformative scenarios. Participants further identified goals, strategies, implementation timelines, maps, and narratives for the scenarios. Outputs of the project included design vignettes for the identified strategies, synthetic models of scenarios, and a qualitative resilience assessment.
Expected impact: to address long-term challenges of the South Mountain Village neighborhood and enhance its capacity for long-term resilience planning by exploring diverse policy options.
